The Four Strand Braid Weave
Today I am releasing my new basket pattern, Twines and Braids.
This little basket is a technique basket, it has a fun beaded rim and it’s great for practicing the step up, (you will find my tutorial for step ups here) but the main point of this little basket is learning how to weave a four strand braid. So, in addition to releasing the basket pattern, I am going to post a woven four strand braid weaving tutorial. I will go through it step by step, like I did with my three strand braid weave tutorial, and at the end you will find a link to my YouTube video tutorial.
Okay let’s get started –the four strand braid weave
You will need four strands. I suggest using two colors. I am using two brown pieces and two orange pieces.
Insert a brown weaver behind two stakes – consider these stake A and stake B, stake C is just right of stake B.
Insert an orange weaver behind stake A, in front of stake B and behind stake C. It will lay just above the brown weaver.
Insert a second orange weaver behind stake A, in front of stake B and behind stake C. It will lay just above the first orange weaver and is woven over and under the same stakes.
Now add in the second brown weaver. It will be behind stake A and stake B, the same as the first brown weaver.
Bring the first orange weaver up so it crosses the second orange weaver.
Now everything is set in place and you can do the four strand braid.
The four strand braid weave has two steps that are repeated for every stake you weave around.
Step One: Take the top weaver (weaver 1 – a brown weaver in the photo), bring it down over the stake C and over weaver 3, then bring it behind the next stake (stake D) to the right and out.
It will look like this (photo 8)
Step Two: Take the bottom weaver (weaver 4, the other brown weaver), bring it up and over stake C and weaver 2 and weaver 1, then bring it behind stake D (the same stake that weaver #1 went behind) and out (photo 9). Notice the ‘x’ created when weaver #4 crosses on top of weaver #1.
This diagram may also help you visualize what needs to happen.
Repeat Step One and Step Two for every stake you weave around.
And this is what the four strand braid woven in two colors looks like.
And this is what the four strand braid weave looks like in all natural, as shown in my Wisconsin Wine Basket. Both basket patterns, Twines and Braids and Wisconsin Wine Basket, are available in The Store.
